As one of the nation’s first organizations to adopt an interracial charter, and given our mission to eliminate racism and empower women, the YWCA of the City of New York, the YWCA Brooklyn and the YWCA of Queens jointly offer our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. We offer our unwavering solidarity to all those engaged in the struggle for social justice throughout our communities. We reaffirm our commitment to creating meaningful conversations and advocacy efforts to eradicate systemic racism and injustice. Collectively, the YWs will continue to engage in action-oriented activism, through the implementation of community programs that elevate the discourse in order to ensure that excessive force resulting in death by law enforcement comes to an end. We support increased political participation among disenfranchised New Yorkers, and increased understanding of the complex social, economic, and political disparities that emerge as a result of our stratified racial history. It is by this commitment that we will most appropriately honor the memories of those who have lost their lives to police brutality.
