SONYC at PS/IS 268
The YWCA of Queens partners with PS/IS 268 in Jamaica, Queens to provide a FREE comprehensive afterschool program for all middle school students, grades 6th-8th. The SONYC after school program offers physical activities such as basketball (girls and boys teams), Step, and martial arts, and arts activities like dance, music, theater, and fashion. It also offers weekly hands-on, project-based STEM and literacy activities, such as Engineering, science lab, creative writing, and journalism. The program starts out with a snack time, and includes a daily homework help time, as well as periods of special tutoring for city-wide math, ELA exams, and math regents.
The program runs from 2:45-6:00 pm, Monday-Friday, September – June. It is open to all middle school students from PS/IS 268, and will soon start taking middle school students from another nearby school as well.
Trips, basketball games, and other activities are sometimes offered on weekends and on days that public schools are closed.
This year, 2017, we also received funding to host our first SONYC Summer Camp, also at PS/IS 268. This program will run for 5 weeks, July 10 – August 11, Monday-Friday, 9:00 am -2:00 pm. The program will offer some of the same activities listed above, plus weekly trips and outdoor activities.
