“Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is better” -Bob Talbert
Our philosophy at the YWCA of Queens Early Learning Center UPK is that children learn best by doing. This free program uses appropriate developmental materials so that children become active thinkers and creative explorers rather than passive learners. Our large classroom is designed to nurture children’s intellectual development, self-esteem, independence, cooperation, and creativity.
By following the New York State Common Core Curriculum, we create a framework of learning that allows children to explore and problem solve, that builds upon their prior knowledge and interests, and that fosters their desire to be self-motivated in the pursuit of learning.
Our experienced and qualified staff carefully listen, observe, and document children’s work and growth. We conduct our program using the guidelines set by the New York City Department of
Education, the Department of Health, and the ECERS program.
Some of our annual events are two parent teacher conferences, costume parade, three age-appropriate educational trips, vision screening, picture day, moving-on day and parent participation day. We encourage all parents and caregivers to participate in these events and to volunteer in the classroom.
We follow the public school schedule for most of the year with a few variations. All parents will be notified on a monthly basis of any events or school closures.
