Summer Literacy Festival 2011

The YWCA of Queens, in partnership with HSBC, celebrated our annual Summer Literacy Festival August 7th, 2011.   This event supports children and the community by promoting literacy while acknowledging our multicultural community.  There was a week-long book fair to kick off this event catered to the diverse interests of our young readers.

The over  400 community members who attended our literacy festival this year enjoyed a wide range of activities and contests all aimed at promoting literacy.   The event commenced with an opening address by Assemblywoman Grace Meng who encouraged children to read followed by some words of wisdom from Councilman Peter Koo’s office.  Families watched the exciting competitions throughout the day including spelling bee, teen jeopardy, and short story writing contest.  Anchorwoman Michelle Park from NY1 served as our spelling bee word reader.  Between events, families enjoyed arts & crafts, balloon art, and face painting while munching on free popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, and hot dogs.   Many of the children also enjoyed story reading with New York State Senator Toby Stavisky and an interactive puppet show!
