On May 26^th, 2013, the Adult ESL Program at the YWCA of Queens joined efforts with the Flushing Hospital Medical Center in co-hosting their first Health Fair & Day of Education at the YWCA of Queens. Health First also participated in the fair, providing information and answering inquires. The Health Fair targeted the ESL population at the YW, many of whom come from low-income families and lack health insurance.

The Health Fair and Day of Education attracted over 60 people in the Flushing community, mostly the adult students of the ESL program. The 3-hour event provided medical screenings as well as educational lectures. Students lined up for blood pressure, glucose, and dental screenings. Three doctors from the Flushing Hospital lectured on cardiology, stroke & rehabilitation, and nutrition. Both services and lectures were received with great enthusiasm. Some students said that they really enjoyed the lectures as they served dual purposes, gaining knowledge about health and insurance as well as enlarging English vocabulary of medical terminology.

With the vibrant and renewed theme of literacy, YWCA Summer Day Camp will enrich the lives of students over the summer months with academic enrichment focused on English and math, interactive field trips to a variety of parks and learning centers, and a variety of supplemental activities including chess, dance, music, and arts/crafts. 2013 New York Music Competition

The YWCA of Queens just hosted its annual New York Music Competition in March. Selecting the winners was especially challenging this year as all of the contestants displayed a tremendous amount of talent. We are especially pleased to announce a grand prize winner, Yun Han, who participated in the cello division; she will be the 7th grand prize winner since we began the New York Music competition 16 years ago. She will be given an opportunity to have a solo recital at the YWCA of Queens separate from the winners’ concert. Please visit our NYMC page for a complete list of winners!

The winners concert will take place at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on April 25th, 2013. Tickets ($20) can be purchased at the Carnegie Weill Hall Box Office or online http://www.carnegiehall.org/.

UPK Architects Project

The UPK class just recently completed a unit on buildings with the exciting project of creating their own dream house. UPK students spent several weeks exploring buildings by reading about different types of homes in different countries, materials used to construct houses, and different rooms that can be found in a house and their function. At the conclusion of the unit, students were given a variety of materials to construct their own dream house! The final products were impressive and families were able to take home their creation!

Each year YWCA of Queens staff, members, and supporters join together to celebrate the yearly achievements of the organization. Many community leaders attend this event and give speeches in support of the YW’s efforts. The night includes dinner, slideshow, silent auction, and a raffle and all proceeds and donations go to support annual programs.

We are pleased to present our keynote speaker Yi Soyeon, the first Korean astronaut and one of the youngest women ever in space.
