Health Fair

On May 26th, 2013, the Adult ESL Program at the YWCA of Queens joined efforts with the Flushing Hospital Medical Center in co-hosting their first Health Fair & Day of Education at the YWCA of Queens.  Health First also participated in the fair, providing information and answering inquires. The Health Fair targeted the ESL population at the YW, many of whom come from low-income families and lack health insurance.

The Health Fair and Day of Education attracted over 60 people in the Flushing community, mostly the adult students of the ESL program. The 3-hour event provided medical screenings as well as educational lectures. Students lined up for blood pressure, glucose, and dental screenings. Three doctors from the Flushing Hospital lectured on cardiology, stroke & rehabilitation, and nutrition. Both services and lectures were received with great enthusiasm.  Some students said that they really enjoyed the lectures as they served dual purposes, gaining knowledge about health and insurance as well as enlarging English vocabulary of medical terminology.
