New Adult GED Program

After providing youth GED classes for over 10 years, the YWCA of Queens is excited to announce it is starting an adult GED program for individuals 21 and over.  The program provides an intensive study of all subjects of the official GED examination in an interactive, supportive environment.  Based on entrance exam results, students will be placed in one of two tracks: GED 10 or GED 20.  GED 10 runs for a total of ten weeks and GED 20 runs for twenty weeks.

If you are interested in enrolling in this program, please call our main number.  You will be given an entrance exam date.  These GED classes are currently free to all members.

We currently offer morning and afternoon classes. With vast educational budget cuts in New York, especially to GED programs, we do not currently offer evening classes. However, because we are committed to meeting the needs of our community, we are currently working on creating an evening program. If you are interested in evening classes, please let us know!

i am currently in the ged program… of the ywca. in flushing queens NY . and since you work from 10 30 am to 330.pm well it depends which program they put you in….. you have the adult pre ged program which is from 12pm — 3:00pm and then you have the adult advanced ged program which is 9:00am to 12pm… and if your wondering how i do know what i know cause i am in the pre ged… so anyway i have the number that for the ywca of ged program in flushing.. its 718 353-4553 and the address of this place is 42-07 parsons blvd flushing NY 11355 you can take the queens bound 7 train to the last top to main street flushing and get of the train station and you will see a store which is big named macys.. as your landmark and you will see diffferent nunmber buses lined along side where macys is and up along that block you will see diffferent blue signs that are polls and that tell you the different number buses where they go and stuff.. you want to take the Q12 bus and stand where the sign says Q12 is.. and tell them to take you to sanford ave and parsons blvd.. and that will leave you right on the corner of parsons blvd and the school is right on ash avenue.. so good luck to you and it’s a buiding i guess you can say and it says on it ywca… anyway… i would call if you want further directions… and if you want to get back from the school just stand on the opposite where the q12 leaves you right on the corner for school when your going to the school.. or you can take the Q26 or 27 which stops right infront of the school that will bring you back to to the main street trainstation.. and all trains go manhattan7 bound when your ready to go back home to wherever you live.. anyway i wanted to do something nice for someone else and yes this school is the best.. you have very nice patient teachers and etc that are willing to help you in anyway they can… hope this helps.. i tried explaining the directions and the school the best way i know how… it’s easier if you see for yourself as far as directions unless your good when people tell you directions by computer nor by mouth… you’ll get your ged for sure..they the teachers will make sure… hope this makes life easier for you it’s one of the best schools i know of cause i experienced from different schools in queens , manhtattan, long island city, woodhaven, they don’t have what this school has.. the proper teachers the right material you need to pass this test for the ged so you can pass.. anyway i suggest also if you can go to the library study there by getting ged level book of whatever you need help it depends how much you remember or you buy the ged book at amazon, or go to barnes and noble… boarders… i think there is a boarders in manhattan don’t any in queens,, and barnes and noble one in the city of manhattan and one in queens in atlas park .. cooper avenue i think… they also have a movie theatre , and different restaruants …. it’s like i guess a mini shopping mall , they got a bike shop too.. trying to describe to you.. if you have a computer you can look it up atlas park… it’s nice over there i went there… well anyway good luck hope this works out with yoru work hours… …

      Apr, 26, 2012

Yes, you can attend the program. However, you would still need to attend lessons on all subjects of the GED exam unless you received scores of 650-800 in the remaining sections. Because the focus of our program is to help students earn great scores, not just passing scores, we expect students to attend lessons on all subjects to ensure attainment of the highest scores possible. Please call the YWCA to discuss your particular situation in more detail.

Im an very interested in this GED program and I am so ready to change my life for me and my daughter. My only concern is the 3 hours that I will spend there is different from the UPK hours that I am interested in putting my daughter in she is ready for the UPK at your center she is 4 years old. So I was wondering if there was any help with that for instance let’s say I would start my GED class from 12 till 3pm but my daughters UPK hours are from 12 till 2:30 is there a way they can still watch her 30 minutes more while I finish my class? I hope there is a way. Please if you can let me know thank you.

Hello. If you are over 21 you qualify for our adult GED programs. Unfortunately our fall semester if closed. However, we do have a new term starting January 7th. Before registering, you must first take a placement exam to determine your eligibility. Once we have determined which class is most appropriate for you, you will be invited to come in for orientation where you will need to fill out an application and contract, as well as provide a picture ID and social security card. If you do not have a social security card, you may still join the program; please talk to the Director on the first day of class if this applies to you.

Thank you for your inquiry. The placement test is not necessarily a pass/fail test. Students will receive scores in math and reading in grade level format (10th grade, 6th grade, etc.). Our programs serve any student scoring at the 5.5 (midway through 5th grade) and above. Therefore, most students will be eligible for our GED or pre-GED programs. If your scores fall below this level, we can refer you to a different institution that offers Adult Basic Education classes.

Thank you for your email. Our advice is, if you want your GED, go for it! Many of our students have similar barriers, but our classes are designed to help you overcome these barriers to earn your GED. The best way to start is to take a placement test. After we have your scores, we will have a better idea of where you are at academically and what type of classes/length of classes you will need to achieve your goal.

I would like to join but I’m only 20 but I will be turning 21 next month and I wanna know if I can still register or if I would have to wait. I also work from 3:00pm -8:00pm Monday through Wednesday I wonder if that will fit into my work schedule as well.

      Hi Elishalynn,
To take our GED classes, you only need to be over 17. Our classes are usually held from either 9am-12pm or 12pm-3pm. Please give us a call at (718) 353-4553. Leave your name and phone number and we’ll get back to you about taking a placement test around November/December.
